For cases of female genital mutilation in girls under 18, there is now a legal duty in England and Wales for doctor’s nurses, midwives and teachers to report instances of this barbaric practice.

Failure to do so will result in disciplinary measures and could ultimately lead to them being barred from working.

This could give rise to negligence in the future and action under the protection afforded under Human Rights legislation.

In Ireland there are now protective measures available to prevent young girls at risk of FGM from travelling abroad.
